What are Siberian Samoyed dogs

Owning a Samoyed is like being seen with a celebrity; everyone wants to say hello, meet your dog, and even take pictures. One of the most common questions you’ll face as an owner is “What are Siberian Samoyed dogs”?

More commonly known as just “Samoyeds,” they’re a one-of-a-kind breed. If you’re thinking about bringing a Samoyed into your home, here’s what you need to know.

What are Siberian Samoyed dogs?

A Samoyed is more than just a pretty face. They’re tough working dogs bred to haul sleds, herd reindeer, and guard their owners. The name comes from the Samoyedic people of Siberia, who worked and slept alongside these wonderful dogs.

There are several physical traits and personality quirks that set the Samoyed apart from other breeds.

Physical traits of Samoyed dogs

The Samoyed is known for its striking appearance, including it’s bright coat and black Sammy smile. Built to withstand even the harshest cold, the thick double-layer coat keeps them warm (and keeps your clothes and furniture covered in hair). Coats come in white, biscuit, and cream. Their coat has “silver tips” at the ends, giving it a gleaming appearance.

The Samoyed has black lips that turn upwards, making it look as if the dog is smiling. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), that has a practical purpose, too. The upturned mouth prevents the dog from drooling like other breeds, because in freezing temperatures, drool would turn to ice.

Although Samoyed often look huge, that’s typically because their thick coats make them appear larger than they really are. In actuality, they’re a medium sized breed. According to the AKC breed standard, Samoyeds should meet the following requirements:

  • Males should be between 21 and 23.5 inches tall at the withers.
  • Females should be between 19 to 21 inches at the withers.

Unlike Siberian Huskies, the Samoyed breed standard prohibits blue eyes.

The famous Samoyed personality

Despite their gorgeous appearance, what draws most Samoyed devotees to the breed is their personality. They are highly intelligent, but stubborn. These are the dogs that are often kicked out of obedience classes, not because they’re dumb, but because they get bored and disrupt the class. They will put their own spin on commands to keep themselves entertained, and can be challenging for even experienced dog trainers.

However, it’s worth the hard work. Samoyeds are friendly to a fault and loving to their families. The Samoyed personality is one that is gentle, playful, energetic, and downright silly.
